Tom Hunter tells these stories using carefully staged, large format photographs, restaging them in compositions that often directly refer to classic paintings of the past, many of the paintings to which Hunter has referred for his compositions can be found in the National Gallery. Using his friends as models, Hunter directs them to use gestures, body language and facial expressions in the same way as the characters seen in paintings by historic artists.

Hunter first came to public attention in 1998, when he won the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award, with a photograph entitled Woman Reading a Possession Order. With its meticulously arranged composition and sensitively captured light, it is a direct quotation from Vermeer’s painting, A Girl Reading a Letter by an Open Window (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Gemäldegalerie, Dresden). Hunters reputation was further established with a series of engaging, puzzling and compelling photographic re-workings of other paintings from the past. They provoke thoughts about issues that are relevant in our everyday lives, however shocking.

Living in Hell and Other Stories continues Hunters’ interest in the stories of inner-city life that take place in his own locality, having lived in Hackney since the age of 19. Tom Hunter is not a photo journalist. His photographs are not literal reconstructions of the actual events. It is not the specific details of the story that attract him; rather it is the idea of a story that is provoked by the eye-catching headline. The idea of turning to his local press as a source for inspiration was suggested by the example of Thomas Hardy. Thomas, like hunter, was born and brought up in Dorset and would trawl through back copies of his local paper to find the stories of public hangings, wife selling and other unlikely events that he eventually wrote about in his novels.

Murder: Two Men Wanted

‘Living in Hell’ was the headline printed in The Hackney Gazette above the story of a 74-year-old woman whose house was infested with vermin. Borrowing from the National Gallery’s Four Figures at a Table by the Le Nain brothers, Hunter composed a photograph with the help of a retired actress and several hundred cockroaches bought over the internet. The Le Nains’ paintings of around 1643 show a woman and children in a modest peasant interior. She has the expression of a care-worn older woman tempered with a quiet sense of self-respect; in Hunters 2005 version the woman has no companions, she is alone. She sits wrapped up against the cold, the electric heater switched off. The sofa is filthy and worn, decaying food lies uneaten. A naked electric light bulb illuminates the room and shows literally hundreds of cockroaches crawling over every surface. This harsh lighting starkly reveals her shocking fate. The Le Nain’s dignified poverty is ripped from its original 17th century context and in 2005, becomes brutally undignified.

National Gallery paintings depict the eternal themes of love, sex, violence, life and death and Tom Hunter has used these and reflected on them in an uncompromisingly contemporary way. He has turned newspaper headlines into commentaries on both the modern world in which we live and the classic themes seen represented throughout the National Gallery.

The EMD Cinema in Walthamstow was a celebrated building. It is acknowledged as one of London’s finest art deco cinemas and is scheduled by English Heritage as A Grade 2* Listed Building in recognition of its architectural significance. Built in the 1930s by Theodore Komisarjevsky, the renowned Russian stage designer, the EMD cinema is one of the only venues left in London that is designed both for live performances and film showings.

The cinema’s prominence is further made abundantly clear by the list of entertainment names that have passed into legendary status. Names such as The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, John Coltrane and James Brown have all graced EMD Cinema’s beautiful Moorish/ Spanish interiors with their presence. However, the name most associated with the cinema is none other than film director Alfred Hitchcock who grew up in Waltham Forest.

Sadly, in 2002 the cinema had to be sold and this time the buyer hadn’t had the cinema’s rich entertainment background in mind for its use- The Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) plan on converting the cinema into a conference centre and place of worship. This has sparked a debate between the McGuffin Film Society along with the residents of Walthamstow (whom without the cinema will be left as the only London borough deprived of one) and the UCKG on the future purposes of the cinema.

The debate has not been resolved despite Waltham Forest Council earmarking £1 million to assist with the redevelopment of the cinema. As EMD has been one of East London’s most significant arts venues for over 70 years, let’s hope that the decision can be made so that this pillar of our cultural heritage gets restored to its former glory.

The Live8 concert in July this year, in London’s Hyde Park was set up to raise awareness about the Black continent issues, but before the first guitar riffs, the gig highlighted one single home truth: Africans should do it for themselves! The lack of performers from Africa in the initial line-up raised eyebrows on every side of the argument.

Cue Ligali, an east London organisation whose role is to monitor the media, act as complaint body, be active in the educational field and raise awareness on the issues that plague black communities up and down the country: gun crime, rebellion against authority, stop and search…On the same day, a day of African remembrance was staged at the Hackney Town Hall and the day-long event put together by Ligali is a “positive day to remember the struggle against slavery, our ancestors and their sacrifice in what is widely considered as an holocaust,”‘ according to Emma Pierre-Joseph, spokesperson for the organisation. She also told CEN Magazine that it is “a forward-looking day to provide a platform of reflection for the whole community and its future.”

The centrepiece of the event is the screening of a newly released DVD on the African slavery trade, the shameful human trade officially abolished in 1772 in the UK and its empire. Liverpool was the unofficial capital of the slave trade with more than 10 millions souls from the continent‘s west coast (Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal) transiting there, on their way to build the new continent, America. Other towns throughout Europe, shared that infamous tag Bordeaux, Nantes, Bristol in France, Lisbon in Portugal, Barcelona in Spain and Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Winner already of the best documentary prize at the Pan-African film festival and Bridgetown film festival and with testimonies ranging among others, from Dr M. Karenga, Amira Baraka, Desmond Tutu, Dr Helena Woodward, Shaykh Muhammad Shareef and Trevor Marshall. The film, is a compelling compilation of testimonies, voices and opinions gathered around five continents and more than 20 countries on the subject. “‘We went to universities as well as into the neighbourhoods to talk to the common folk,” says Asante Jr, the talented scriptwriter and poet, who was a first year media graduate at the time when he started working on the project.

HIV/AIDS, crime, drugs, low expectation, and underdevelopment plague most people of African origin throughout the world. 500 years later, after slavery, colonialism, the cold war and subsequent neo-colonialism, daughters and sons of the continent are still suffering and cannot enjoy basic freedom or wealth. Told from the continent vantage-point, the film scrutinises the holocaust and subsequent uprooting of Africans from their homeland and culture. In the words of producer-director, Owen ‘Alik’ Shahadah, “500 Years Later chronicles the struggle of a people who have fought and continue to fight for the most essential human right: Freedom.”

Owen used to produce a stylish work of art and set up a website www.500yearslater.com to foster and further the debate, knowing that the film has already garnered interest from education bodies throughout the world, willing to use it as a teaching method.

That might be exactly what African communities in the UK need, as reveals Asher D, the rapper and member of the So Solid Crew collective in his subsequent Channel 4 documentary aired in November 2004, surfing on the same subject, but neighbouring issue of the ‘N word’ (nigger/ nigga).

“It’s definitely an issue that people of my generation don’t know enough about black history and that’s a point I raise throughout the programme.” He finishes with “when it comes to the teaching of black history, there is none” and for the first time, our rulers seem to agree with him, as Liverpool’s Riverside Labour MP Louise Ellman called for the Blair-Brown government to introduce teaching slave trade history in British schools and asked for a national day of remembrance. 117 MPs across the chamber joined her and settled for the debate to take place in the commons, during Black History month in October this year. However, on the question of responsibility, which could trigger lawsuits and potential reparations, the government washed its hands of the problem, stating that it “cannot take responsibility for what happened over 170 years ago” even if it recognizes that “the slave trade is one of the worst examples of man’s inhumanity to man” and added that it wasn’t an unlawful act at the time the British government condoned it. 500 Years Later the film’s sequel will be released in 2006, focusing on AIDS/HIV, the colonisation of the African continent, neo-colonisation, the ill-effects of globalisation with a chapter on Bretton-Woods institutions like the World Bank and the IMF.

The film has an obvious quality, for its combination of thoughtful photography signed by the director Owen, retrospective voices and using a multi-media platform to get its point across, which could see him becoming a benchmark in filmmaking history. Although filed with facts, it relies on a gripping narrative infused by the flavour and a soundtrack for poetical freedom and liberation. Showing the chains that tied their ancestors and contemporaries, it also offers a serious path outside of the plantations.

Scriptwriter, Asante Jr is a poet master with an interesting ability to transfer its art from the written/spoken word to the screen and his influence transpires throughout 500 years later. “To have people be so receptive and come up to us crying and embrace us after seeing the film is just amazing,” reveals Asante Jr. “We worked on the project for two and half years, and you just don’t know if people are going to like it; you are just going on passion and what you think is right.”

Right he surely was.

Three artists from east London, Alan Bond, May Cornet, and Dawn Shorten have been chosen as lead artists in the Artvaults project which takes place from July 9th to Oct 9th.

These artists have just returned from a showing in Rome and Artvaults is a development of that show. Dawn Shorten and Alan Bond will be sharing the Castle Vault with pieces about Space. Dawn Shorten, whose work is invariably wry, humorous and deadly serious will show ‘Fly Me To The Moon’, a spectacular reconstruction of a rocket launch. Alan Bond has constructed planetarium consisting of a geodesic dome which sits on a circle of doors scavenged from skips. Light penetrates through hundreds of holes drilled in the dome.

The PlanetariumThe Planetarium is a response to the form, dimensions and dark of Castle Vault. It develops ideas about space that have informed Alan Bond’s recent paintings in which eroded, scuffed and perforated painted surfaces parallel the cosmic history of collision, creation, destruction and remaking.

In The Planetarium he uses the cast-offs of the material world and makes reference to the world of advertising and consumerism. Exploiting the aesthetic attributes of these re-cycled materials he transcends their source, to create a mysterious allusion to the ethereal beauty of the night sky

Somewhere in this piece are cryptic references to medieval ideas about the underworld, heaven and earth.

May Cornet will show at 94 High Street. Her installation is reminiscent of a laboratory. The illuminated seed boxes suggest a process of cloning but May sees each of the seedlings having the potential to grow into something unique. Delicate, clinical and beguiling, the work suggests a scientific intervention into the natural processes of creation and germination.

News From Nowhere: Visions Of Utopia promises to be one of the largest art events in London this year. A number of public sites in North East London, including The William Morris Gallery, the Changing Room Gallery, The Waltham Forest Theatre situated on an island and surrounded by a moat, Lloyd Park, and a massive building site in the centre of Walthamstow, The Vestry House Museum and Walthamstow Town Hall will be used as stages for exhibitions, interventions, installations, audio visual works, music performances and public art activities during September/ October 2005.

CarnegieBased on the title of the William Morris novel News From Nowhere, and set in and around his birth-place, the project aims to re-examine the legacy of utopianism: upheld by the idealists of the 19th and early 20th century, who believed passionately in the possibilities of radical social change, with visions of a future egalitarian world, it is a distant cry from our post-modern, post-ideological times.

An international line-up of artists, designers, musicians, writers, thinkers and performers will be presenting their work in the context of the various spaces. The events, works in progress and completed pieces will be documented and published on-line in the Visions of Utopia web site. The site will also provide a global forum for open contributions, reports and sightings of utopia.

A special limited edition newspaper, News from Nowhere will be published and distributed, including essays, documentation and interviews with local and global residents, as well as those of the participating artists and organisers. The 18th-century Water House, Morris’s family home from 1848-1856 is now the William Morris Gallery. It is the only public museum in the world devoted to this country’s best known and most versatile designer with internationally important collections illustrating Morris’s life, achievements and influence.

Art Utopia For the first time, a selected group of artists, designers and writers will be given a unique opportunity to place work within the House and permanent displays, resulting in a series of juxtapositions and interventions alongside the work of Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites; featuring the legendary Tony Benn, designers Ralph Ball and Maxine Naylor, architect Meredith Bowles, artists Stephen Williams, Liane Lang, Anderson Inge, Malcolm Barrett, Luis Gonzago Barriera Bras Keith Ball and Steve Wheeler. With sonic work by Isobel Jones and video performance from Claire Robins.

Nina considers the musical language of jazz to be one of her greatest inspirations. Her exhibition, Jazz in the City is the culmination of a life’s work for this innovative and unique artist.

It also begins a tour featuring Nina as an artist in residence, to include The International Jazz Festival in Moscow, during which Nina’s work will be exhibited at the State Museum for Contemporary Art, Moscow.

Nina was born in the Russian city of St. Petersburg and obtained a Masters Degree from Moscow’s Gubkin Academy. In 1991 after

she moved to Germany, Nina started her career as an artist where she studied under teacher and artist Margarita Budini. From 1994 to 1998 she established her studio in The Netherlands and in 2000 she moved to London where she has been living and working as an artist. Now based in Richmond, Nina finds artistic inspiration for her paintings in music, poetry and philosophy. The powerful colours and dramatic shapes in her paintings reflect her own experience of living in different cultures, while still infused within her Russian heritage. Nina says of her traveling experience, “I have found the most success in London, because London is a cultural centre and a major port. Kinky-Kalinki Transrussian Express is a tribute to London’s art scene, to show how you can be poor and foreign in London and still be accepted.”

Kinky-Kalinki Transrussian Express is a documentary film charting London’s art, music and club scene from 2000 to 2005, the length of time that Nina has lived here. “I have focused on one east London club in this film,” says Nina, “Rhythm Factory on Whitechapel road where it is possible to have live music, art on the walls and a club night all in one. East London is a buzzing area, that’s not to say that Richmond where I am based is not buzzing, but East London has a modern and contemporary feel.”

Nina has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows and has begun to exhibit her work across Europe and overseas. In December 2003 Nina represented the UK at The Florence Bienniale and in November 2004 was invited to be Artist in Residence for Black History Month at the National Opera Studios in London. Other artistic residencies include River Walk at The OXO Tower and The Players Theatre in The West End.

Carol Cordrey will be in conversation with Nina on the 22nd of September at the Glass House Gallery and comments, “Jazz was once the music of yesteryear. Now, it is growing in popularity in cities the world over. Its powerful rhythm and improvisation have always appealed to performers with strong characters. Using instruments or voices, passion or pathos, they have used jazz to stir the human spirit. Nina Gruschwitz has an expressive personality, loves jazz and imbues all her work with a plethora of emotions. With brushes for instruments, this artist reinforces the contemporary impact of jazz. It is now seen and not just heard.”

Nina Gruschwitz’s exploration of Jazz and its influence on her art is to be exhibited at the Glass House gallery from the 13th of September.

Of special note are three documentaries screening at City Hall telling the migrant stories of the first Chinese settlers in east Londons Limehouse Basin in the very first China Town. The film explores their views on British life and eventual settlement here. Memories of the genuine children of Limehouse Chinatown is an informal documentary film capturing the historical experience of Connie Hoe, Leslie Hoe and Leslie Heng, now in their eighties and nineties who take you on a journey to the Limehouse Causeway and Pennyfields area of east London, before the second world war. Reminiscing about their Chinese fathers from Hong Kong and Shanghai, their historical east end upbringing, the Blitz, all the fairy tale myths that have sprung up about the Chinese community and how they have integrated and settled in London, Connie Hoe, Leslie Hoe and Leslie Heng will also be available to talk to at the end of the screening. Whispers of Time charts the lives of London’s elderly Chinese people who have settled in Britain since the 1950s. They discuss their life stories, childhood experiences, the war years, marriage in China, migration their early impressions of Britain, settlement, achievements and the next generation.

The National Portrait Gallery screens two striking romantic films from prominent filmmaker Zhiang Yimou, The Road Home and Happy Times. Yimou is an internationally acclaimed director and after graduating from the fifth class of the Beijing Film Academy in 1982, along with classmates such as Chen Kaige and Tian Zhuang, became known as a Fifth Generation filmmaker alongside his peers. Together they produced a new Chinese cinema rejecting the politicised angst of national survival in films of the first half of the 20th century and the class heroics of socialist realist cinema under Mao Zedong after 1949. Two decades on, Zhang Yimou is one of the most versatile and significant of these Fifth Generation directors.

The National Film Theatre also hosts Jiang Wen in conversation with Anthony Minghella. Wen is a celebrated Chinese actor and director whose film Devils On The Doorstep (2000) was a winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, but was never distributed in the UK. Anthony Minghella is one of the UK’s most outspoken and respected film directors and is also the Chair of The British Film Institute.

‘Catalyst’ is a collaborative mix media project based around poems by London writer and visual artist Cat Miranda aka Cat Catalyst. Cat’s poetry explores spiritual and humanist concepts, embracing emotion and looking for a deeper meaning.

Choreographer Briar Adams creates the movement and composer Danbob Clarke contributes electronic beats, with lyrics by director Cat Miranda.

In addition to Cat Catalysts poetry, there are special guest appearances from active poets David J, Tim Wells, Ramshackle Event, Salina Saliva, Baden, Pom Pom Poets and more.

East London Metropolitan Opera continues to bring together top professional musicians with members of the local community and children from Hackney schools accompanied by a full orchestra.

For those with more contemporary, independent tastes, a hip triple bill on the 13th July with Billy Childish and the Buff Medways, Ed Harcourt and Paul The Girl, is not to be missed. A cult figure in America, Europe and Japan, Billy Childish is arguably the most prolific painter, poet and songwriter of his generation. In a twenty-year period he has published 30 collections of his poetry, recorded over 90 full-length independent LP’s and produced over 2000 paintings. High praise comes from Alternative Press, USA, “Of all the ’70s punk survivors Childish is one of the select few who didn’t sell out, or end up sucking.” Whilst Time Out describes Billy as “terse, gutsy and powerfully humane.” Ed Harcourt, reviewed by the Observer Music Monthly, has been praised also, “the blissful sound of a besotted drunk in love…Harcourt retains a composer’s eye for detail which repays whatever attention you care to give it.” British artist, Paul The Girl is an admired and accomplished musician; The Guardian review wrote,”…on her own tiny label, Paul is making the most original music of any British artist, of either gender.” Spice festival goers will be spoilt for choice with the line-up of drama performances. From Cardboard Citizens; an clectic mix of theatre, circus and music developed and devised by This Way Up, the UK’s largest arts performance programme for homeless people, to Rajni Shah Theatres’ story of Queen Elizabeth I, a traditional Indian bride and according to the synopsis, “…the relationships we have to the land we live on, and the theatres we all invent.”

Let’s not forget the little people for whom the Movingstage Marionette Company bring double bill, Captain Grimy and The Three Little Pigs, a charming puppet show re-telling these familiar, timeless tales. Also presented by Spice Festival is Richard Pinner, Gold Star BAFTA award winner who will be performing, “excellent close-up magic,” as described by The Stage.

The diverse drama available includes internationally renowned theatre company Rotozaza presenting their unique and innovative acts without any rehearsal. Actors perform by following live instructions. ROMCOM or The Distance Love Can Be Maintained Between Any Two Fixed Points, by Glen Neath is performed by two unprepared actors with headphones telling them what to say and do. The Glasgow Herald likens it to,”…one of Godards movies…as well as comedy it’s a complex study of compatibility and communication.”

• FLIGHT 5065 – Live Arts Festival at the London Eye

Jimmy McDonald, Director of Undu Graduates is eager to “provide the perfect environment to see the next generation of designers from the UK and overseas.” As a branch of the 100% Design contemporary exhibition to be held at Earls Court, Olympia it also forms part of the 100% Guaranteed satellite events which have been increasingly successful over recent years. 100% East will be divided into three key areas comprising of the main exhibitor area, the Talent Zone and the Bombay Sapphire Blue Room.

Whilst the Talent Zone will be of particular interest to emerging hopefuls as it will showcase prototypes from 150 of this year’s graduates, the Bombay Sapphire Blue Room will expose the works of 25 designers short-listed for the international award for excellence and innovation in glass design, the Bombay Sapphire Prize 2005.

Exhibitors include Paul Cocksedge, Thomas Heatherwick and Ross Lovegrove, finalists for the Bombay Sapphire Prize 2005; James Harris Product Design, Modoloco Design Milano, Savannah College of Art and Design, Formfollows, Nice Design, Ryan Frank, Nicolas Destino, Jamie Langfear, Mia Cullin and Andrew Laybourn.
